<image:caption>It was after working on a project in a slaughter house that I emerged with a sense of emptiness, that there was something innately wrong with mankind and the lack of empathy for other creatures that inhabit the same earth as we do. It seemed my lecturer felt this disconnection and contracted me to do a small side project on Catholic worship in Goa. At first I was unsure what to do, I had only ever been in churches as a tourist and anything to do with religion seemed too old, too distant and estranged from my own life that I would never find any connection. When I first stepped into St. Jerome's a strange man welcomed me in, said he plays the violin during communion and invited me to join morning mass the next day. When I arrived at 6am, I placed myself at the back of the church, still feeling like an intruder, foolishly attempting to cross myself and hold my hands in prayer just to fit in. The massive church doors were wide open to let in the cool air, and slowly as the sermon began, golden channels of morning light silently crept into the old church and began illuminating the people inside one by one. The warm light began to connect everyone as more beams started streaming in, finally reaching and igniting the golden adornments behind the priest. To me it felt like the people were being touched with something more than just light; with love, with faith, a blessing of some kind, I don’t know. I walked out of the Church still feeling like a stranger, however I knew that I had just witnessed something so simply beautiful, yet totally enigmatic. Maybe it was God, or maybe it was just sunlight. But I started to think, maybe it could be both.</image:caption>

<image:caption>7000 kilometers from their tropical jungle home, it begins to snow. Huddled next to the cold brick wall, two unnaturally dark eyes peer out from underneath a thinning fur coat. Where the wall meets the glass is the only place out of the wind and frost, but it means closer to the indifferent eyes and the endless tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tapping, that becomes the metronome for the rocking. Rocking, back and forth, back and forth, that only stops when replaced by pacing. Pacing with frustration. Pacing at boredom. Pacing to distract from the tapping. Tap, tap, tap. A quick glance through the glass, to meet the apathetic gaze of onlookers with a silent plea for freedom. A glance around the frosty brick enclosure looking in vain for a way out. Then to sit back down in despair. Rocking. Back, forth, back, forth, back, forth. All day. Every day. Humans have been capturing animals for millennia, either for entertainment, or as an assertion of dominance. From the Samaritans in ancient Mesopotamia 4,000 years ago, to Aztecs in the Americas. Even to Alexander the Great was said to look after a great menagerie of monkeys and bears. The modern zoo emerged in the 19th century designed to educate visitors and impart a connection to wild animals, but it is only recently we have begun to feel empathy towards the captives. The argument that zoos provide us with educational merit, is fast becoming less and less acceptable. Locked behind bars, worlds away from their natural climate, animals display emotions of despair, depression, anxiety and loss. Far from their liberated kin who are free to roam, and free to live. Zoos therefore face us with an obvious irony. Fascinated by their wild and wonderful qualities, humans have worshipped and feared animals since the dawn of time, yet it is this exotic nature that is stripped away once caged. It is within this paradox, the futile and cruel reality of animals in captivity becomes blatant. With 175 million people visiting zoos annually - able to come and go as they please - Zoocation is a response to how we use animals for entertainment and decoration, highlighting zoos as an example of man’s need to conquer and divide. Incarcerated indefinitely, forever waiting and watching. Forever pacing. Forever separated.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Driving down the bustling streets of downtown Hebron in the occupied West Bank, air conditioning blasting, we pull over to pick up Rawda Alshreef. A tiny 53-year-old clad in a race-car-red thobe (a dress-like robe), matching high heels and a baby-pink hijab, her energy immediately fills the car as she begins cracking jokes. It is not until we arrive at the sports hall, where she changes into her black and red Adidas tracksuit, that she finally looks like the current and longest-reigning female table tennis champion in the Palestinian territories. “In tournaments, they always ask where is Rawda Alshreef?” she says, laughing. “If I’m there, they know that I will win. If I’m sick or miss a competition, then they have a chance.” Being an athletic champion at 53, while also being a mother of five and grandmother of 10, is a pretty badass move anywhere in the world. But in Hebron, the largest and most socially conservative Palestinian city, it’s downright unprecedented. But a combination of circumstance, a patriarchal society and family drama has kept Alshreef from a global breakout so far. Since age 15, Alshreef has not missed an annual West Bank championship match. Holding the No. 1 ranking for 13 years, she has represented her country in multiple international competitions. This detail is the most important for Alshreef, as it is extremely difficult for Palestinians to travel in general and for women in conservative families to travel alone.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Nestled in the rolling hills of the small Christian village of Taybeh, in the occupied West Bank, the first micro-brewery in the Middle East holds their annual Oktoberfest. The Taybeh Oktoberfest is a time to forget war and occupation. You won’t find the usual oom-pah-pah bands and lederhosen-clad-bros chugging steins. People from all ages, gender, ethnicity and religion are there enjoying local music, food and of course, having a tipple. The Taybeh brewery was established in 1994 - just after the signing of the Oslo Accords by the Khoury family who returned to their Palestinian homeland from America to found the Taybeh brewery. Today, sixty percent of the beer is sold in the West Bank, 30 per cent goes to Israel and the remaining ten percent is exported to Spain, Britain, Chile, Japan, Germany and the US. They produce a range of flavoured hand-crafted brews reflective of Palestinian produce including wild za’atar, sumac, lemon, sage, anise, peppers and dead sea salt, with all varieties brewed according to German purity laws. The neighbouring country of Israel, however, is not simply a market for Taybeh: It is an occupying force for Palestinians. Brewing under occupation is not always smooth sailing. From Israeli imposed water restrictions, importing and exporting issues, not having control over borders, social constraints, technological difficulties - they have it all. But Taybeh sees beer as a small contribution to coexistence. It brings together Israelis and Palestinians — Christians, Jews and Muslims, alike. The alcohol-free variety is halal, which permits Muslims, more than 90 percent of the brewery's neighbours, to drink it. They even have a Kosher variety for the Jewish market. This story is about inclusivity, resilience and peacebuilding through the shared love of beer.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects</image:title>
<image:caption>In the summer of 2018, we gave disposable cameras to kids who lived in the Palestinian refugee camps of Qalandiya and Am’ari, located in Ramallah, the de facto capital of the occupied West Bank. These children are the descendants of the 750,000 Palestinians who were violently displaced during the creation of the state of Israel in 1948. A date Palestinians refer to as the “Nakba” or catastrophe. Many of the Palestinians who were exiled were denied the right to return to historic Palestine, much of which is now the modern-day state of Israel. More than 70 years later, 5.4 million of their descendants live in dozens of refugee camps in Gaza, the West Bank and surrounding countries. Simply to have a glimpse into their world, this is a collection of images several kids captured over a few days, tracing the narrow alleys of the camps. The (expired) 35mm film cameras were bought, developed and scanned in Ramallah, the scans keeping the imperfections that come with producing work in the field. This series was the starting point for my PhD research which explores how collaborative photography could be reimagined and redeployed to document and communicate the domination and subjugation of subalterns in these lands, and (perhaps more importantly) their agency to resist, and their self-imag(in)ing of identity, self-determination, and emancipation.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Opening in 1916, the Aslan Tile Factory has now been operated by five generations of the Aslan family. The factory is one of the last of its kind producing Shami tiles, which were brought into the Levant during the French colonial era. In 1913, founder Hamdi Jamil Aslan built a workshop in the city of Acre and opened branches in the cities of Haifa, Jaffa and Nablus the same year. All were closed shortly the 1948 war to save the Nablus workshop. This once popular and mainstream product was in its heyday during the 1930s, but has since seen a decline after cheaper, mass produced tiles became an option in the late 1980’s. The factory has survived through wars, invasions and the grip of occupation. “This craft is a cultural legacy that one generation passes on the next. I teach my children about the Shami tiles whenever they have some time. I do not want this craft to be forgotten,” Anan Aslan said.</image:caption>

Strong friendships, loves and times changing are all part of discovering that life doesn’t end at thirty like pop culture tells us it does, that the day passes just like any other. When everything changes, and yet stays the same in a single day - and you realise that age is a state of mind, not an arbitrary number.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About</image:title>
<image:caption>Dr Miriam Deprez is a Meanjin/Brisbane-based academic, photojournalist, and early-career research fellow with the Disrupting Violence Beacon at Griffith University. Her work covers Europe, the Middle East, Russia, Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and Australia, where she has worked as a freelance journalist, editor, and photographer. Miriam’s PhD research examined the visual politics of occupation and resistance in Palestine and Kashmir, emphasising collaborative and decolonial visual methodologies. Her research and practice also focus on post-conflict environments, particularly on understanding and reducing the impacts of militarised indigenous landscapes. At Griffith, she has taught human rights journalism, security studies, and analogue photography. She also serves as secretary and field researcher for the Australian NGO SafeGround, which aims to mitigate harm caused by legacy and emerging weapons.</image:caption>
